There are many ways to enjoy the River Thames as it flows through one its most famous stretches at Henley. Get on the river with a scheduled trip, hire a boat yourself or even learn to row. If that’s too energetic relax in one of the parks with a picnic or stroll along the banks. Henley’s river can be enjoyed all year round.
Mill & Marsh Meadows
Henley’s Mill & Marsh Meadows are the formal and informal parks adjacent to the river upstream of Henley Bridge. It holds the prestigious Green Flag Award which recognises the best green spaces in the country, both spaces offer areas to relax alongside the river.
Mill Meadows has a café, summertime tourist information centre where deck chairs can be hired, putting green, children’s playground and recently refurbished public toilets. In the summer there are regular weekend concerts on the Bandstand.
Limited car parking is available at Mill Meadows, the Station car park is a 2 minute walk.
Scheduled Public Cruises
Hobbs of Henley and Salters Steamers both run scheduled trips down the Regatta course and around Temple Island from their respective bases in Station Road and Mill Meadows throughout the summer months.
Cruising with Accommodation
A number of canal boats and barges offer on-board accommodation while cruising the upper Thames on short breaks or holidays, while self-hire cruisers are available a short distance from Henley. Hobbs of Henley has two luxury Linssen cruisers for weekly or weekend hire which sleep 6.
Messing About on the River Yourself
Small rowing boats are also available from Hobbs or plan in advance to rent a canoe from Henley Canoe Hire for a relaxed paddle. You can even learn how to row just like Henley’s athlete’s with expert tuition from the Henley Rowing Association or try your hand at Stand Up Paddle Boarding. If you’re planning to swim don’t do so without advice from the local experts at the Henley Open Water Swimming Club.
Mooring in Henley
Temporary moorings are available in Henley at Mill Meadows on a first come first served basis. These are the moorings closest to the Town Centre and facilities. For more information visit www.henleytowncouncil.gov.uk/services/moorings.
Temporary moorings are also available downstream of Henley Bridge administered by SRB Moorings.
There are easy walks along the riverbank to Marsh Lock, Temple Island and Hambleden Lock.
River & Rowing Museum
Henley’s prestigious museum has a gallery devoted entirely to the geography, history and ecology of the river and can be found in Mill Meadows.
